Brazilian energy giant Petrobras has received regulatory clearance to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at its Duque de Caxias Refinery (REDUC), marking a major step in the company’s decarbonization and energy transition strategy. The approval from Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) enables Petrobras to begin producing SAF by co-processing renewable feedstocks alongside conventional crude oil derivatives.

Located in Rio de Janeiro, the REDUC refinery is one of Petrobras’s most advanced facilities and will now play a pivotal role in meeting Brazil’s growing demand for cleaner aviation fuels. The move aligns with global sustainability goals and the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in aviation by 2050.

Petrobras plans to leverage its extensive refining infrastructure and R&D capabilities to scale up SAF production across other refineries in the near future. The company emphasized that the technology adopted at REDUC ensures high-quality fuel compatible with existing jet engines, without the need for infrastructure modifications. This milestone reinforces Petrobras’s commitment to advancing low-carbon technologies while maintaining energy reliability and economic growth.
