Italian energy major Eni has announced a new biorefinery conversion at its Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi complex to produce SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) and HVO diesel from waste and residue feedstocks. The facility will process 550,000 tonnes per year and leverage existing pipeline infrastructure to supply fuels to airports in northwest Italy.
This transition reflects a broader push within Europe toward integrating renewable feedstocks into traditional refining systems. Eni plans to scale its biorefining capacity from 1.65 million tonnes per year currently to 3 million+ by 2028, aiming for output of 2 million tonnes of SAF annually by 2030.
By converting part of its conventional facility to biorefining, Eni bridges conventional and green pathways—optimizing existing infrastructure while advancing net-zero goals. It positions Sannazzaro as a strategic hub for supplying cleaner aviation fuel to Milan Malpensa and other major airports via connected depots and pipelines.
