Repsol is set to strengthen its clean energy portfolio by constructing a state-of-the-art green hydrogen plant at its Cartagena refinery in Spain, marking a major step toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The project, part of Repsol’s broader decarbonization strategy, will utilize electrolysis technology powered by renewable energy to produce up to 100 MW of green hydrogen—one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe.
This hydrogen will be integrated into refinery operations to reduce CO₂ emissions, enhance process efficiency, and support the production of low-carbon fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. By replacing fossil-based hydrogen with renewable alternatives, Repsol aims to cut the refinery’s carbon footprint substantially while promoting circular economy practices.
Repsol’s Cartagena facility is already one of Spain’s most advanced industrial hubs, and the addition of a green hydrogen plant positions it as a pioneer in renewable refining technologies. The project also aligns with Spain’s national hydrogen roadmap, which targets 4 GW of installed electrolyzer capacity by 2030.
