Mexico’s Olmeca refinery in Tabasco, also known as Dos Bocas, has been awarded third place in the prestigious 2025 International Project Excellence Awards in Berlin. The recognition highlights the refinery’s achievements in project planning, technological innovation, and execution quality, placing it among the world’s most noteworthy megaprojects.
Commissioned in 2024, the Olmeca refinery is designed to process up to 340,000 barrels per day, though it has yet to reach full operational throughput. It produces a wide range of products including eco-diesel, ultra-low sulfur diesel, propylene, sulfur, and petroleum coke, with plans to integrate renewable diesel capacity in the future. Industry experts praise the facility’s use of advanced process technology and its role in strengthening Mexico’s refining independence, reducing reliance on fuel imports.
The award reflects the scale and complexity of Olmeca’s execution, but analysts stress that consistent operational performance and ramping to design capacity will be the true test of its success.
